Electronic Magazine Capstone Project Document

Abstract

The ABC e-Magazine is a website for the ABC publication that can publish their articles, news, events and activities online. The ABC is a public educational institution that aims to provide higher technological, professional and vocational instruction and training in science, agriculture and industrial fields and has its own publication organization called ABC.

It was founded at Negros Occidental School of Art and Trades (NOSAT) before the ABC was born (Student Handbook 2012). An online magazine is a magazine published on the Internet, through bulletin board systems and other forms of public computer networks. An online magazine shares some features with a blog and also with online newspapers, but can usually be distinguished by its approach to editorial control. Magazines typically have editors or editorial boards who review submissions and perform a quality control function to ensure that all material meets the expectations of the publishers and the readership.

This system will help the school publication to update the students in real-time process. It has a database to record their work and to hold their previous write ups for future use. This system will also provide the school publication an accessible website for the students, writers and student contributors for sending their work to the editor-in-chief. The proposed system aims to help the Technopacer publication to lessen paper work and time spent in the process of their work. In addition, the system has a unique username and password for every member.

Introduction

As generation passes by, technology dominates the world. However, the people cannot negate that although there is technology to help us do things easily, yet there are offices or business that uses manual procedures of doing things. Manual keeping of important documents through the use of filing of cabinets and folders are commonly seen in most offices. Methods like these are proven to be time consuming and extended more effort; data and information kept in these filing cabinets were prone to vulnerability.

An online magazine is a magazine published on the Internet, through bulletin board systems and other forms of public computer networks. An online magazine shares some features with a blog and also with online newspapers, but can usually be distinguished by its approach to editorial control. Magazines typically have editors or editorial boards who review submissions and perform a quality control function to ensure that all material meets the expectations of the publishers (those investing time or money in its production) and the readership.

The proponent will develop a system that the students can view the articles of ABC through online. They will serve as a website/magazine that the ABC writer can upload their work electronically. In addition it has a database for previous gallery and publication. It gives ABC to the ABC to lessen the risk and paper works and it’s more productive. This ABC e-Magazine can be used not only in the school campus but also on mobile phones, laptops, personal computer that have access to the internet.

Background of the Study

The ABC is a public educational institution that aims to provide higher technological, professional and vocational instruction and training in science, agriculture and industrial fields and has its own publication organization called ABC. It was founded at ABCD before the ABC was born.

ABC is still using a manual process for sending their giving work to the editor in chief and publishing their works. The Students will have to wait for months to see the magazine that the ABC release after the school ends its term. The ABC has no database system that can hold a records of the previous works. It does not have website that writers can use for sending their works. The student’s contributors only used their Facebook account and G-mail account to send their works to the ABC editor in chief.

The proposed system will help the school publication to update the students in real-time process. It has a database to record their work and to hold their previous write ups for future use. This system will also provide the school publication an accessible website for the students, writers and student contributors for sending their work to the editor-in-chief.

Statement of the Objectives

Manual sending of write ups, and no database server can cause absents of the documents.

Generally, the study aims to:

Develop a website that can publish articles of technopacer electronically, it has a database for their previous articles, videos, photos of Technopacer publication.

Specifically, the study aims:

  1. To create a website that can electronically publish students articles of ABC, videos, photos taken during school activities.
  2. To develop a ABC website that provides in terms of:
  3. User friendly
  4. Easy access to end-users
  5. High security of articles to avoid foul terminology

Conceptual Framework

Conceptual Framework of the system

Figure 1: Conceptual Framework of the system

The conceptual framework shows the flow of the systems and how will be processed. ABC e-Magazine is an online system. It allows user to access the website of ABC to upload their articles electronically.

The system:

  1. We needed the approval of editor-in-chief of the finish article. All the write ups submitted by the student contributor will be check by grammarian and the approval is needed. The writers create and submit article. The write created and submitted by the writers. The media photos and videos will upload by the photographer.
  2. Allow access users.
  3. Students will be updated of what happening inside and outside the campus. The student can contribute their work to editor-in-chief.

Scope And Delimitation of the Study

This section enumerates the scope covered by the research and its delimitation.

Scope

The study covers only ABC. It is an accessible website for all the people inside and even outside of the school campus. This system will be a big help to the writers and grammarian of the ABC because they can communicate without seeing each other in person and it could be done electronically. The proposed system aims to help the ABC publication to lessen paper work and time spent in the process of their work. In addition, the system has a unique username and password for every member. This ABC e-magazine is a website for the ABC publication that can publish their articles, news, events and activities online. This proposed system has a database gallery that will hold their previous work.

Delimitation

The study will not cover sending or giving of violent reactions or putting negative comments on published articles. Those Articles are downloadable but not editable by unauthorized person. Only authorized person can manipulate the system and can change the (uploaded) files and details. The writer or contributor who already graduated cannot access again the system and login to their accounts because if they are already graduated their status will change and it would be inactive.

Significance of the Study

This study focused on various group of people. It is the hope of the proponents that the result of this study will be useful to the following.

ABC Staff. Specifically, this system expected to provide ABC a website that can be accessible to the following staff.

PENS: a personalized electronic news system. It is a web-based environment; A framework has been developed as a basis for design and implementation of adaptive.

The proposed system is the best way and can properly preserve the important data of their daily operations. It will be profitable and beneficial not only to the company, but to the students as well. The proponents have noticed that all of those related system do not have features that enable users to download and upload features. Therefore, the proponents took the features not found in the related systems and incorporated them to the system to make it more effective and easy to access, and beneficial to the viewers and users.

Methodology

This chapter shows how the system flows and the phases it goes through. The proponents follow the standard software development life cycle (SDLC), to describe and present solutions to the problems identified in this study, using the Prototype model. This chapter also discusses the functionalities and detailed descriptions of the different components of the system.

This model works best in scenarios where not all of the project requirements are known in detailed ahead of time. It is an iterative, trial and error process that takes place between the developers and the users. Therefore, the proponents found it suitable to explicate the project in a simple and easily to understand manner.

Through gathering information from the editor-in-chief of the ABC, the proponents figured a solution to their problem.

Design Phase

Prototyping Model

The proponents will use several laptops and personal computer, with Windows 7 or latest version of O.S as operating system in the development of the system. Sublime Text as the text editor for using HTML as the markup language and JavaScript for the client side scripting language. CSS is used for the design development, in order to make the system user-friendly. For the server side scripting language, the proponents will use PHP and MySql for the database storage.

Implement Phase

This system will be implemented online, Suited for the students that will be easy to access.

Maintenance Phase

The system requires maintenance every six months in order to keep the system’s functionality on track and deliver great services to every student.

Testing Phase

In the testing phase, the prospects find it fitting to hold the test in school and invite ABC staff and students to test the system.

User’s Acceptance Survey

The system will undergo user acceptance testing by the users of the system: The ABC staff and the Student of the school.

Requirement Specifications

Operational Feasibility

At present, ABC e-Magazine has no electronic magazine. Not even in the social media department. This system will help them a lessen time consumed, paper works and accessible website for the students not just in school publication but also in the outside of the school campus. With that, the system will sure be beneficial to the school publication.

Basically, the goals of the system are to develop the following functionalities:

  1. The website is an online web-based system that can be accessed anywhere that has internet access.
  2. The website can publish the article of school publication electronically.
  3. The website has a notification for grammarian if the writer has already submitted their works.
  4. The website has a notification for the editor if the grammarian already checks their works.
  5. Only authorized person can manipulate the system.
  6. The website provides sorting and searching features for different purposes like searching by names and etc.

All these functions do not drastically change the current procedural steps; hence problems to its implementation are expected to be minimal.

Program Environment

 Front End

The front end is the interface between the user and the system. The front end is the one responsible for collecting the input data from the user and then processing it so that it completes the request that the user has made. In this study, the proponents will use PHP as the main scripting language, while HTML, Javascript, and jQuery for providing the user interface of the system. As to the design the proponents will use CSS codes

Back End

The back end is the “server-side” scripting codes that reside in the server. In this study, the researchers will use PHP as the server side scripting language which serves as the middle ware and MySql for the database.
